President Ali Stands with MV Barima Families and Demands Full Accountability

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has assured the nation that every available resource is being mobilised following the MV Barima tragedy, while promising a full, thorough and independent investigation into what occurred.

On Monday, the President travelled to Region One, where he met survivors and relatives affected by the disaster. He listened to their concerns, offered comfort and assured them that the Government remains focused on supporting families and assisting the emergency response.

In a national address, President Ali said the rescue and recovery mission would continue until every possible avenue had been exhausted. He also recognised the work of emergency personnel, government agencies, volunteers, fishermen, community members, the private sector and international partners involved in the national response.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre deployed 13 assets from first light on Monday. By 12:35 pm, the Government reported that 10 bodies had been recovered since the incident. Search operations remained active as teams worked to locate and account for those who were still missing.

The Government has also launched an investigation involving the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Defence Force, Maritime Administration Department and technical maritime experts. The investigation will examine the passenger manifest, the loading of passengers and cargo, compliance with maritime safety regulations and the conduct of the captain and crew.

Authorities confirmed that several rescued persons were not listed on the official manifest. They also reported that two rescued crew members tested positive for cannabis during medical examinations.

President Ali said affected families and the people of Guyana deserve answers about what happened and whether any failures contributed to the tragedy.

His message has centred on continuing the search, comforting grieving families, supporting survivors and establishing the facts through an independent investigation. He has also called on citizens to support affected families with unity, patience, compassion and respect.
