Ali’s Vision in Action: Empowering East Berbice Through Smart Agriculture and Housing

Approximately 500 single-parent families in the East Berbice area will soon have a chance to become financially independent with a new 50 acres of land project designated for advanced farming initiatives.

This was announced by President Irfaan Ali. The project aims to significantly empower single-parent families in Rose Hall and surrounding areas through access to land and modern agricultural practices. This initiative further highlights the government's commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of vulnerable populations.

The initiative includes the installation of hydroponics equipment, which offers a modern, soil-less approach to agriculture. Hydroponics and aquaponics (which combines fish farming and plant cultivation) aim to increase food production sustainably and efficiently.

An additional benefit for the recipients is government assistance in marketing the goods produced, ensuring that families have access to markets for their products.

Meanwhile, 100 acres of swamp land will be allocated for expanding a successful brackish water shrimp project, which had its highest production levels in history last year, generating approximately $1.3 billion in revenue for Guyana.

Another initiative is a comprehensive $6 billion plan to construct 500 homes in Yarrowkabra that will integrate modern agricultural technology and sustainable energy solutions. The first 25 homes are expected to be completed by July 2025.

The PPP/C government’s fostering of entrepreneurship and provision of access to modern agricultural practices, these projects are likely to enhance food security, improve quality of life, and promote self-reliance within these communities.

The renewed emphasis on supporting women and single-parent families indicates a recognition of the distinctive challenges they face and a commitment to gender inclusion in economic development efforts.
